Complicated Evil is loosely inspired by the short story The Ones Who Walked Away from Omelas written by Ursula Le Guin. Movements 1 and 2 explore the duality of a society that can be labeled as great, peaceful, and perfect to the criminal acts of allowing even one person to suffer. Even though Ursula is depicting a very made-up society, reflections towards any country under these same pretenses can be made; especially the United States. As tensions rise we, just like the people of Omelas, will either choose to leave the fantasy of one’s perfect life behind and protest the cruelty of reality OR ignore the cruelty.
