This is currently a two-movement work centered around a single and very long conversation I had with my grandmother over winter break in 2021. Like most people, she has a habit of going on about stories but she has a special talent of switching topics whenever she feels to keep you on your toes (as she should). I did my best to translate this conversation from Vietnamese to English and make sense of the narrative that she was telling me. The first movement,
Coffee Politics is about the close relationship she had with her mom, the loss of her youth to work, and the subsequent preparation and death of her mom. In the original audio, she spends much of the time talking about taking care of her mom by making sure she was fed throughout the day with an iced coffee to pair (despite her mom not liking coffee).
Pile Home on the other hand is me admitting to the universe that I did not pay attention to this bit of the conversation. Something about money being sent back. Yeah.
